A hybrid is essentially a cross between two species - in this case, two eucalyptus species. The species selected for suitable tree planting in Uganda were: E. Grandis, E. camadulensis and E. urophylla. E grandis is always the mother tree in the hybrid crosses, allowing the best traits of the species whilst also allowing the remaining species to contribute. Once the crosses are made, individual trees are selected based on performance and physical characteristics to propagate through harvest of cuttings and subsequently raising them in pots. In Uganda, GU clones are known to perform better in cooler, wet regions such as the West of Uganda (Rwenzori mountains, Kabarole, Fort Portal, etc.). GC clones are known to perform best in hotter climates where rainfall is less plentiful. Why plant Hybrid Eucalyptus clones? Hybrids are able to harness the best qualities of both species, so they perform better under a greater variety of challenges.
By selecting individual trees (the best performers) the shape and size will be consistent - when you are dealing with products such as transmission poles, it is extremely important to get a straight, uniform pole to get the best price. • Hybrids also have more resistance to pests and diseases that might attack the trees. • Hybrids can adapt better to a wider range of climatic conditions. • Hybrids can provide higher yields (if planting and maintenance is done adequately) MATURITY PERIOD: CLONED EUCALYPTUS Maturity period as follows:- 1.
